Local Spotlight: Giving Songs
When navigating the sea of life’s circumstances, you don’t have to swim alone. Music that moves the soul—and helps alleviate day-to-day life—that’s what Southeast Michigan’s Giving Songs is all about.
Giving Songs is a completely volunteer-based, grant-giving charitable organization that strives to make life a little easier for Southeastern Michigan families with children who use wheelchairs. They help to provide valuable resources to those families, and they want them to know: They understand.
A Dream Was Born
After learning of the difficulties faced by families who have children with disabilities, Brent and Jaime Johnson founded Giving Songs. They knew they were blessed to find a wheelchair-accessible van for their disabled son and growing family. However, Brent, President and founder of Giving Songs, was bothered by the fact that there are so many families throughout the Southeastern region of Michigan who have to go without access to the same opportunities.
Thus, the idea for Giving Songs was born. Through the art of music, this beautiful organization strives to give back to those families who find themselves traveling on similar journeys.
Giving Back Through Song
Giving Songs provides a platform not easily found in today’s communities. It allows for families with children who use wheelchairs to come together in a unique way: through the artistic form. It provides relief through song to families who are much like their own. To date, over 80 local musicians have used their talents to give life to the cover songs for Giving Songs’ three compilation CDs.
Since its foundation in 2012, Giving Songs has held a number of music-themed events throughout the community as well. These vibrant events feature live music from the amazing musicians who support and believe in the Giving Songs mission.
Giving Songs also provides resources to families with disabled children, such as available applications for wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Southeastern Michigan families with children who use wheelchairs can go on their website for more information on how to apply for this special grant.
