Local Spotlight: Farmington Hills Education Foundation
Education is essential for success throughout life. However, roadblocks, like lack of funding, can sometimes get in the way of achievement. It is to prevent such roadblocks that The Farmington Hills Education Foundation exists today.
Read ahead to learn more about how this foundation goes above and beyond to assist students throughout the state of Michigan!
Proposal A: Where It All Began
In 1994, the funding for Michigan public schools saw a drastic overnight change that still affects the state’s educational system to this day. When Proposal A was put into place, Michigan public schools were funded by the State Legislature instead of the local municipalities.
Originally, this plan was meant to equalize public school funding throughout the state. But as the Michigan economy struggles, so does the funding provided by Proposal A. This is where the Farmington Hills Education Foundation comes in.
In 2012, this foundation was created as a way to supplement the Michigan public educational system. Their ultimate goal is to provide each student with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed throughout their lives.
How They Make the Dream Happen
The Farmington Hills Education Foundation focuses on four key areas of funding:
- Technologies: understanding technology & building off of that knowledge
- Scholastic Achievements: providing support & resources in academics
- The Arts: offering programs in the fine & performing arts to maximize opportunity
- Extracurricular Enrichment: rounding out education beyond the classroom
The many programs that fall into these areas of funding are sponsored by gifts from longstanding donors and one-time donations from everyday citizens. Even a few dollars can make a difference in the lives of Michigan students.
Since they were founded in 2012, The Farmington Hills Education Foundation has given 307 scholastic awards totaling more than $347,000. Thanks to past and present donors, every school in the Farmington Public School District has benefitted from this foundation.
Get Involved & Make a Difference!
While fundraising for their many programs is their top priority, The Farmington Hills Education Foundation also prioritizes acknowledgement and encouragement in Farmington Public Schools. Show appreciation by nominating a Farmington Public Schools’ staff member for their Applause! program.
Be sure to connect with them on Facebook and Twitter, so you don’t miss out on other fun events that they host such as their annual wine and beer tasting called “A Toast to Education!”
