You can keep an eye on the depth of your tire treads by either resorting to the old Lincoln's head penny trick or for a more precise reading, invest in a tire tread gauge. If you can barely see the top of Lincoln's head, or the tire gauge reads less than 4/32-in, it's time to start looking at new tires.

Look for the tread wear indicator bars. These are flat rubber bars that run across the treads. If your tires have plenty of tread left you won't see any of them. But as the tread wears down with usage, they will start to show themselves. If you can see more than one or two, it's time to start pricing new tires. Examine the sidewalls. Be on the lookout for tracks, grooves, or cuts. If they're obvious to the human eye, it could be a sign that there's a leak waiting to happen. If you notice the tires are vibrating more than usual no matter the condition of the pavement, it's a sign that something's wrong. Your tires could be unbalanced or the wheels out of alignment, but it can also mean there's some sort of internal problem with the tire.
